Sir John Herschel With Cap by Julia Margaret Cameron
Julia Margaret Cameron is today regarded as one of the most important and experimental photographers of the 19th century, though her approach to photography was much criticised during her lifetime. She started photography in 1863 at the age of 48 after her daughter gave her a camera as a present. Her intense close-up portraits, broke the established rules of the medium at the time. She experimented with long exposures, soft focus and atmospheric lighting conditions to create powerful portraits.
