The Culture Acid Test

Thomas Czarnecki’s recent photographic series ‘From Enchantment to Down’ takes as its subject the fairy tale heroine and their fall. As a viewer of his images we are privy to what we can only assume to be the scene of their murders; though recognisable by their costumes their faces are concealed. Snow White has tripped face first, her shoes splayed behind her, bitten apple having tumbled from her hand. There are no discernible signs of violence on her body, and her attacker is no longer present. Pocahontas, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, the Little Mermaid, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, Jasmine and Beauty are all inflicted with the same treatment in seedy settings, with lifted skirts, discarded shoes, killed in the midst of their retreat.
