X-Men #34 (1967, July)

Any issues or arcs of other comics you want me to review, let me know. For today, “War – In A World of Darkness!”

The issue opens with the X-Men trying to repair Cerebro, again. Jean threatens to take Bobby and Warren over her knee if they don’t get food and sleep, a threat that’s entirely too appealing. Jean heads back to college, calls Ted, and finds out Ralph’s been kidnapped. She calls Angel and Iceman to come help. The three of them head to Ralph’s lab, where Ted tells them Ralph was grabbed by Tyrannus, an underground leader (an immortal Roman and regular Hulk foe). Then he brings them to an atomic-fitted earth-borer with plates of Ralph’s new super-cobalt alloy. They get in, and Jean calls Warren Scott. You’re a credit to your gender, Jean. Black Milk

Black Milk

The question is not: What is being? Rather, philosophy begins internal to life. The question is not ‘what came first’. Modern philosophy is one of multiplicity, superimposition, weave, density, depth and warmth. There is a caloricity. This is an interior philosophy. It is embodied.

Dreaming and imagination replace experiment and method. Dreaming or reverie is not removed from reality. We must invent the heart of things if one day we wish to discover them. (Gaston Bachelard) Anaxagoras speaks of the snow which is composed of water as being black despite our eyes. There is an alchemical transfiguration, material imagination is demiurgic. Collette Gaudin says that in the heart of matter there grows an obscure vegetation: in the night of matter, black flowers blossom. They already have their velvet and the formula of their scent.

Turner’s Sky

Turner’s Sky

Turner’s painting is wide open, the sky is ever-present. At times he takes us into the sky, perhaps it has already always been enveloping the totality. Color with Turner becomes an interior experience. Color objectives the tenor of the enveloping space. Color in Turner’s work is more present than objects.

Color is emerging and it is emergence. Eye and spirit are unison. This then is an homage to Turner’s sky, would he have painted it blue.
